Spring Coat Care: Your Guide to a Clean, Shiny and Beautifully Groomed Horse

Spring Coat Care: Your Guide to a Clean, Shiny and Beautifully Groomed Horse

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your horse’s grooming routine. As the weather warms up and winter coats begin to shed, changing conditions can bring a fresh set of grooming challenges — from loose hair and built-up dirt to tangled manes and tails.

Whether you’re preparing for competition season, heading out for more rides or simply enjoying some extra time at the stable, a consistent grooming routine can help keep your horse looking and feeling their best.

With a little help from Carr & Day & Martin, achieving that beautifully clean, glossy finish is easier than ever.

1. Start with a Thorough Clean

For a deeper clean: Gallop Extra Strength Shampoo

For horses that may not have been washed as regularly during the winter due to the freezing cold - that first wash back in spring may need a little extra 'omph' to help remove dirt and grime in the coat. Gallop Extra Strength Shampoo is up to the task - an extra thick shampoo with double the level of active ingredients to our regular shampoos for intensive cleaning.

Apply undiluted to a wet coat or add 5-6 capfuls to a bucket of water. Massage into the coat with a sponge, brush or by hand, then rinse thoroughly for immediate results.

For the skin sensitive horse : Gallop Clean & Clear Shampoo

Many horses struggle with coat heath and various conditions, especially during seasonal coat changes. Its important to approach their coat care from a different angle. Gallop® Clean and Clear Shampoo is a high specification formula ideal for dry, flaky, itchy, scurfy and sensitive skin. Soothes and calms irritated, sore, damaged and sensitive skin. The pH neutral formula contains natural oils that helps soften and lift scabs and dandruff. Provides exceptional conditioning, noticeably softer hair and a shiny coat.

Spring tip: Avoid over-washing, which can strip the coat of its natural oils. Choose your bathing routine according to your horse’s needs, and make sure your horse is comfortable and properly dried afterwards.

2. Give Your Mane and Tail Some Extra Attention

A beautifully groomed mane and tail can make all the difference to your horse’s overall appearance. However, winter heavy rugs, changing weather and time spent in the paddock can leave hair tangled, dusty and difficult to manage.

For a smoother finish: Canter Mane & Tail

Canter® Mane and Tail Conditioner is never equalled in its ability to keep the mane and tail sleek, tangle-free and luxuriously soft. This powerful detangler is our most popular product and is a favourite around the world. This original, long-lasting conditioner makes grooming quick and easy, and reduces hair breakage all while leaving an immaculate, oil free shine.

Spring tip: Avoid excessive brushing of the tail, particularly when it is wet. Gentle detangling and regular maintenance can help keep the hair looking fuller and healthier.

3. Make Regular Grooming Part of Your Routine

While the right grooming products can make a difference, consistency is just as important.

Regular grooming helps remove loose hair and surface dirt, gives you an opportunity to check your horse’s skin and coat, and provides valuable time to notice any changes that may need attention.

As your horse sheds its winter coat, use a suitable grooming tool like an Equibuff or a curry comb to help remove loose hair without irritating the skin. Pay attention to areas beneath rugs, around the girth and saddle, and anywhere sweat or dirt may accumulate.

If you notice persistent itching, hair loss, scabs or irritated skin, investigate the cause rather than relying on shampoo alone.

4. Finish with a Little Extra Shine

A clean coat, a neatly groomed mane and tail, and attention to the finishing touches can transform your horse’s overall appearance.

After washing, rinse thoroughly and allow your horse to dry completely before putting rugs back on. Once dry, a final brush helps smooth the coat and remove any remaining dust.

For an everyday grooming routine, keep your essential products close at hand so you can maintain your horse’s coat between washes.

Remember, a glossy finish starts with good grooming habits, appropriate bathing and a routine suited to your individual horse.
